It has a rectangle area of 70000 hectares, from which a 40% is found in exterior territorial waters and a 60% is found in interior territorial waters. It was created by initiative of the fishing sector supported by the Spanish oceanographic institute and the university of La Laguna in Tenerife. The island of la Graciosa is the most eastern island of the archipelago, its marine surroundings are influenced by the raised cold waters full of fish coming from the African coast. This area is in part responsible for the wealth of the fishing sector of the zone. The continental platform is not very deep and consequently very luminous. The vegetal species form in this area a prairie called cymodocea nodosa.
